The Hall & Company Internship Program, now in its fifth year, offers tomorrow’s future CPAs a chance to jumpstart their career, develop their professional skills, and grow their network. Learn what it’s like to intern at one of Orange County’s premier CPA firms from one of our previous interns, who is now a full-time permanent employee here at the firm.
Hall & Company offers two audit and two tax internships every year, lasting four months each. The internships are paid, and students from local universities – such as Chapman University, University of California, Irvine, or California State University Fullerton – have the opportunity to spend between 20 and 30 hours a week learning about taxation, auditing, and general business consultancy during their work placement. Hear firsthand from Zihe (Christy) Wan, a graduate of the program who is now a Hall & Company audit associate, about her internship experience.
What school did you attend and what program did you study?
I graduated from the University of California, Irvine this past June with a Master of Professional Accountancy degree.
What type of internship did you complete at Hall & Company?
I completed an audit internship, which lasted four months.
How did you learn about the internship program at Hall & Company?
I learned about the internship program at UCI’s Meet the Firms event, a yearly accounting business fair that allows students to network with multiple professionals from various companies while learning more about each firm’s culture and career opportunities. I also learned about the program through a Hall & Company Office Tour.
What attracted you to Hall & Company’s internship program?
The thing that attracted me most was the nice colleagues. I had a really fun conversation with Xi and Liang during the Meet the Firms event at UCI, and I loved Hall & Company’s business culture. Since the internship would be my first job opportunity in public accounting, I wanted to gain as much knowledge as possible during the program. I felt that Hall & Company was the best place for me to achieve that, and I felt like this is an organization where I can realize my future career goals.
What was a typical day like for you as an intern?
Although I learned a lot from school, I never used the knowledge in real life. However, when I came to Hall & Company, I was finally able to use my knowledge to support my work. Additionally, help was always provided – the staff, senior team members, and everyone, in general, were willing to help me at any time. They always encouraged me, and that gave me a lot of confidence.
What about the internship did you enjoy the most?
Here at Hall & Company, everyone is seasoned with experience. Whether a staff member or a senior employee, everyone can always answer your questions. I can only hope to be as wise and knowledgable as them in the future! Also, facing many clients enabled me to learn something different every day, and colleagues weren’t afraid to assign me demanding tasks just because I was new.
How did your Hall & Company internship prepare you for your professional career as a CPA/accountant?
The professional skills and knowledge that I learned supported me well when I was preparing for the CPA exam. This internship also provided me with a detailed introduction to auditing and how accountants process everything.
What advice do you have for future Hall & Company interns?
Don’t be afraid of asking questions or making some mistakes; you are here to learn and gain experience. There are many intelligent people that can help you and guide you through.
